I stand by what I said; if you are not even aware of one of the greatest lighting cameramen working in this country today,(Trainspotting, Billy Elliot, Shallow Grave, and numerous shorts,) how can you call yourself a film-maker? Next you'll be saying you've never heard of Freddie Young, Roger Deakins, John de Boorman, or Remi Adefarasin. If you have a passion for football surely you'd know the names of most premiership players if they came up? To be any good at something like film making you have to know the tools you need to make a film (even if you direct) and be aware of the leading practicioners of that art to learn from their efforts. How else do you expect to be taken seriously? I'm presuming that's the idea.

There was me thinking this was a major resource for independent film makers, a means of sharing info, tips, opinions and what have you, with other like minded individuals always ready to learn anything that can help improve their hobby, craft or knowledge. Did you bother to find the article I refered to? The ten tips for short film makers that Tufano gives are invaluable.

Just beacuse you don't know the names of people in the buisness doen not mean you cannot be a filmmaker, it just means you need to do your homework.

but I guess I need to quit films too, judging from the thread. I mean, I always thought David Tatersal (Wind in the Willows, Phantom Menace) was the best DoP ... or even some of the europeans, or the guy who Dop'd Apocalypse now, but geesh I can't remeber his name so I must be a worthless piece of shit filmmaker, sorry guys (I know his name begins with V ...)

Ever ones to miss the point, have any of you actually looked at the article I took the trouble to tell you about, or are you all so wrapped up in your planned 3 minute mini DV epics not to want to expand your horizons and learn something that might get you out of amateurville. You dont have to know the name of every technician but the whole point is if you sit there and ignore those around you that know a lot more than you, by which I mean the Tufanos of this world, not me, you will amount to zilch. If nothing else, your work might be better and what more could you want than to get better at doing what you like to do?

I dont spend time memorising cameramen's names, but I do study their work and try to learn from it, and I'm quite prepared to pass on to the board useful info that I come across. And I get a broadcast camera credit most weeks.

A good place to look for camera tips is, the Ads on telly.

They have 30 sec or so to get their message across and they use all the angles and camera movements to tell their stories.

Sorry mate, but thats bollocks. Just because I have no idea who the hell Brian Tufano is. I cant call my self a filmmaker. Dont make me laugh. For the record I have no idea who Freddie Young, Roger Deakins, John de Boorman, or Remi Adefarasin is either. I guess I must be a realy bad filmmaker now. I know know about Brian Tufano, Freddie Young, Roger Deakins, John de Boorman, and Remi Adefarasin.

Alas I am a FILMMAKER. Am I now being taken seriously?

As it happens I have seen many movies Brian Tufano has worked on.

Ive also seen Doctor Zhivago, Bloodline. Ive seen allot of Roger Deakins movies (Im a coen fan). I loved The Shawshank Redemption and Im loving Band Of Brothers.

I appreciate a nice lookin film as much as the next guy but just because I dont jerk of over the credit sequence doesnt make me a bad or any less serious a filmmaker.

When I have the budget to accomadate a professional DOP. Ill look up names for the movies I like the look of. Ill find the right guy. But dont tell me I need to know every fuckin crew member to have ever made a movie in order to be taken seriously. Thats obsurd.

Jeez. Maybe if you spent less time memorising names and more time making decent movies I would know who the hell you are as a filmmaker as aposed to some clunk of a forum.

I have nothing agaist anyone telling us about a good article or a good website.

Its the stupid comments that come with it that pisses me off.
